Birds, they are everywhere. There are over 8700 living species of birds representing 27 distinct orders in the world. Of these, more than
18 orders and 600 species live In Canada.
On Vancouver Island we have over 450 kinds of birds that ether live or visit here.
We have birds that live on the seas and birds that hunt the airways, we have birds that live on the sweet nectar of plants and others that eat carrion. We have fish eaters and fly eaters.
There are many types of birds here on the Island and once in a while, we will get a rare visitor from some other part of the world to surprise and amaze us.
You should see the way birders travel once they hear of a rare bird sighting. Its almost like a migration.
There is something very calming about walking in a birding area like an estuary or mountain trail looking for birds,
my family and I have always enjoyed both birding and walking in the fresh air.
Whilst you are birding, keep your eyes open and you might see many other creatures, little ones like mink and Raccoons or bigger ones like bears and elk. There are many fascinating plants and insects to see, so always keep your eyes open, you just never know what might step in front of your binoculars or camera.
Birding is good for you, it gets you out for walks and pleases the soul. So get out and start looking for birds in your area. You will be amazed at the diversity of birds out there. You will love the wonderful songs they sing.
